The Project

Raising funds for provincial rugby is a challenge faced by clubs up and down the country. The MRU is no different and funds need to be found to continue the planning, management and promotion of community rugby in the Manawatu.

Not content to rely on handouts, the MRU has opted to use an innovative way to raise funds, the construction and sale of a four-bedroomed house in Grand Oaks Drive subdivision near Awapuni Racecourse in Palmerston North.

The idea is the brainchild of Shane O'Brien, managing director of Colspec Construction and MRU board member. With the full support of the trust, and the willing assistance of the local construction sector, the project mirrors the camaraderie and team spirit we often see being played out on the field.

What's happening?

The MRU are organising the construction of a home in Palmerston North to raise funds for community rugby. It is a brand new, architecturally-designed four-bedroomed home located in the Grand Oaks Drive subdivision.

View 3D ImagesA section was purchased last year, and in March 2011 work began on organising materials and labour to build a house on the section.

When's it happening?

Work on the new home began mid-March and construction, including landscaping, will likely be finished in September 2011, at which time the house will be sold off.

Alternatively, the property can be brought off the plans. Contact Shane O’Brien on (06) 357 9837 or by emailing Shane@colspec.co.nz.

Why's it happening?

In the past, funding for provincial rugby has commonly come from uncertain sources where the value of the contribution it makes varying significantly. This includes money from gaming machines, gate takings or sponsorship.

While all donations are greatly appreciated, these uncertain funding sources mean cash flow for supporting community rugby can be hit and miss. In recent years, it's been more miss than hit and the board decided a new approach to funding was needed.

While this project is currently a one-off, it is testimony to the MRUs efforts to take the initiative in achieving financial stability, standing on its own two feet and making sure there's enough in the coffers to keep grass roots rugby alive and well in the Manawatu.
